The 2018 Chemistry Competition Award ceremony held on he 10th of November 2018 at the Conference Center of the Petroleum Training Institute Effurun was a huge success. The total number of persons in attendance were 402 comprising of students , teachers, parents, guests, CSN members and a delegation from Chevron Nigeria Limited
The Chevron delegation was led by Mr Tony Emegere, , the Superintendent, Policy, Government and Public affairs Warri, who represented the Managing Director Mr. Jeffrey Ewing.
The Chairman of the occasion was Prof. Sunday Okeniyi President Chemical Society of Nigeria who was ably represented by Dr Peter Berezi, Chairman Awards Committee . The National Publicity Secretary Mr Kehinde Oisemaye was also in attendance
The Commissioner of Education (Basic/Secondary) Barrister Chiedu Ebie was represented by the Director, Science and Vocational Studies Mrs K. Oderhorhwo. Plaques, certificates, books and cash gifts were given to students, teachers and schools that excelled accordingly.
The guest lecturer Prof Samuel Chuks O. Ugbolue the Dean of Physical Sciences and Director of Academic Planning and Quality Assurance of Edwin Clark University Kiagbodo Delta State spoke on the topic " The Role of Chemistry in Transforming Nigeria to a Diversified Industrialized Econnomy ". The highlight of the lecture was that Chemistry as the bedrock of science plays a major role in diversifying the economy with its impact ranging from agro to polymers, textiles, medical, pharmaceutical, manufacturing etc and also in managing the consequences of the activities of these industries in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner.
A short video clip on “The Wonders of Chemistry” was shown to stimulate the students to pursue a career in Chemistry and create an awareness on the importance of Chemistry to the general audience .
