First Women in Chemistry (Nigeria) Symposium

The 1st Women in Chemistry (Nigeria) Symposium held on Wednesday, 21st of September, 2016 during the 39th Annual International Conference of the Chemical Society of Nigeria. This took place at the Law Faculty, Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), Port Harcourt, Nigeria. There were three Speakers for the event. Prof. (Mrs.) Mary EDEMA spoke on “Work-family life balance”. Prof. (Mrs.) Miranda Dosunmu spoke on “Resilience in professional life” while on Dr. (Mrs.) Marline Waziri spoke on “Coping with financial challenges as a Career-Family Woman”. About 90 persons were in attendance of which 70 were women. It was generally agreed that there was a need to sensitize “Women in Chemistry” on their responsibility to impact on girls and other Women in Society.

The three Speakers were commended for making out time from their busy schedules to be there for the Symposium. Each of them was presented with a golden cup. At the end of the Symposium, it was announced that the plan for the coming year would be to organize Seminars for girls in Secondary schools and female undergraduate students on “Career opportunities in Chemistry”. This would in done in all the States in Nigeria.
